![]() We didn’t succeed in getting the Paintbrush canyon permits the day we got there, but we got them for the following day for North Fork Campground. Once we left our warm car to wait in line for permits, a decent line had already formed. It was pretty chilly outside so no one really wanted to wait outside for an hour and half, which in hindsight we should have done. We were told by a friend that the doors opened at 7am turns out they opened at 8am, whoops. We arrived at the Jenny Lake Visitor center at 6:30am after a 2 hour drive from Yellowstone. I think it should be the day-of, but alas. GTNP allows walk-up permits the day before starting a backcountry trip. From my pre-trip research, the Paint Brush Canyon/Cascade Pass loop popped up a lot so we wanted to try for that as our first choice, and succeeded! Paintbrush is in the figwort family, which also includes snapdragons and. It was also Labor Day weekend, so we were a little nervous about acquiring walk up permits for our top choices. The trail clears treeline on the final approach to Bogachiel Peak and High Divide. We really wanted to backpack in the Tetons, but we missed the permit deadline earlier in the year. The past few years we’ve been pretty good about planning out our itinerary and reserving permits for the backpacking trips we want to do, but this trip had pretty much no planning at all. This year we explored the national parks in Wyoming as well as some cool spots in Idaho. It doesn’t matter if you complete the trail from north to south or south to north, the 550 miles of the Wyoming section of the trail won’t disappoint.Every year, a group of my close friends and I do a 1-2 week outdoor adventure trip somewhere in the USA to get away from our jobs, reconnect with each other, and get into nature. Continental Divide Trailįor the most adventurous, the Wyoming section of the Continental Divide Trail will take backpackers through the most diverse terrain that Wyoming has to offer. Wildlife is abundant and you’ll be in grizzly bear country making safe food storage crucial. You’ll see everything on this trail from pristine alpine lakes, endless wildflower meadows, granite peaks and canyons cut through the granite by glaciers. While the views are stunning it does take some preparation to plan the perfect route, secure permits to camp in the park and to arrange a shuttle since it isn’t a loop hike. There are designated campsites at the South Fork of Cascade Canyon making it a good stop for the night before you travel on to Lake Solitude, through Paintbrush Divide and down Paintbrush Canyon, completing the trek at Leigh Lake or String Lake. Continue on the trail hiking past Marion Lake in Grand Teton National Park, into Death Canyon, through the Alaska Basin and up through Hurricane Pass. From there, simply follow the trail until you get to the intersection of the official Teton Crest Trail. There are several route options for the trail, and most hikers complete it in 3-4 days, making it a perfect option for a long weekend.Ī great place to start this trip is from the top of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, accessing the trail via aerial tram. Views from the Teton Crest Trail are simply unforgettable. But the wildflowers, crystal-clear high mountain lakes and scenery make the trek worthwhile. The final day will loop you back to the trailhead. Most people camp in the Cirque the first night and then traverse through Texas Pass to Shadow Lake the second day.
